today el mundo shows that the u.s.a. tracked 60 calls in a month. they're demanding answers about the nsa spying on germany's leader, angela merkel. with europe demanding new rules of the road to control the vast electronic snooping. >> reporter: when he was a candidate barack obama was a rock star in europe. that was then. this is now. as europe reacts angrily to news that the u.s. spied on 35 leaders, including listening in on german leader's angela merkel's personal cell phone, in her case for more than a decade, all from what they call do dos nest. a cia inside of berlin. how did the man who won the nobel peace prize become the subject of europe's scorn. the white house can thank nsa leaker, edward snowden. president obama has had to apologize to hollande, merkel,

and current and former leaders in mexico and president ruseff who even canceled a state visit to washington she was so angry. while the nsa scandal is also causing protests at home, with european allies, it could cost serious money. the european union, america's largest trading partner, is threatening to cancel pending trade talks in the u.s. >> when we're doing this in germany, france, great britain, other nations we've been allied with in fighting al qaeda, invading libya, these kinds of things just trample trust. >> the administration and its defenders say most of the spying is legitimate for the protection of the u.s. and its allies. >> so a bad guy in afghanistan can use networks in france or germany or great britain or the united states and plan operations with somebody else who may be in afghanistan, but you could still use all of those networks. >> the nsa has issued an unusual denial of one british report that said president obama had

been told three years ago that the nsa was eavesdropping on merkel's cell phone, but that is the only clear denial so far as the administration is now scrambling to answer angry allies without knowing just what edward snowden will leak next. matt. >> andrea mitchell. thank you very much. get some perspective from robert goetz. he is an nbc news political analyst. robert, good morning. good to see you. >> good morning. how are you? >> as somebody who used to live and breathe these kinds of crises, what are we talking here? do you consider this to be a much damage has been done? >> well, look, i think clearly damage has been done. i think we have to evaluate whether the costs of the method of gathering some intelligence greatly exceeds the benefit of that intelligence, particularly when we're listening into apparently some of our very closest allies. >> it seems that the feeling from the white house so far up

until this point has been, look, we all know, wink, wink, everyone does it. everybody spies on each other. this seems to go above and beyond that when you're talking about potentially listening in to the phone calls of a world leader like angela merkel. >> i think it's certainly embarrassing for both sides, particularly for chancellor merkel to read some of this in german outlets. i think what it puts into danger are a few things. information sharing that we get from our closest allies. obviously our closest allies by definition are the ones most likely to help us the most but if we're straining those relationships, we could be straining that. with brazilians canceling state visits, the rising powers in the world turning them off when we don't have deep relationships with them certainly also could cause harm to overall national security efforts to protect america. >> you were senior advisor to the president.

what intelligence would be served by listening to the phone conversations of a world leader of an ally? >> we have to evaluate whether or not the benefit at all that we get from something like this or might get from something like this is in any way greater than the cost. i don't think with some of our very closest allies, great britain, france, germany, it makes a tremendous amount of sense. obviously we've got relationships around the world that are very, very dear to our national security and we shouldn't threaten those by trying to get information that, quite frankly, is probably not altogether very useful. >> robert goetz, former white house advisor, thank you. >> want to turn to oklahoma now and a man hunt for four men who made a daring escape from a local jail over the weekend. nbc's cakerry sanders has it. >> reporter: good morning, matt. like a plot out of a movie. four inmates all described as pretty crafty who crawled their

way to freedom through a crawl space just above their jail cells. >> reporter: the four escaped convicts are dillon ray, three irons, tuwynn brown, thomas wesley johnson and tristan sws cheatle. they had been convicted of burglary and other charges but together they devised a plan. pretty crafty? >> they are. >> very early sunday morning the four men were in a shower area of their cell. they climbed up through a trap door above the shower head into a small area that houses the plumbing pipes. from there they were able to work their way about 30 feet through the plumbing crawl space, break through a concrete wall into a utility room that led out of the jail. >> this opening is 12 inches 15 inches? >> pretty close. i haven't been up there. they say it's tight. >> the breakout follows the high

profile case a week and a half ago of two convicted killers serving life sentences in a florida prison who simply walked out using fake documents. they were captured by federal marshalls a short time later, but the incident has authorities reviewing the protocols for florida's prison system. and now in oklahoma they'll be doing the same thing. but in the meantime, people in cato county should be careful. >> anybody that goes to prison, they're considered to be dangerous and possibly around. >> reporter: authorities say that just this weekend they realized that several trap doors above the shower had not been sealed so they began to actually have them welded. they got all of them but two. matt, savannah? >> kerry, thanks very much. now breaking news overnight. the early release of dr. conrad murray. >> that's right.

conrad murray, the doctor convicted of involuntary manslaughter in michael jackson's death. he was released just after midnight for administering a fatal dose of propofol to jackson. the doctor hopes to regain his medical license and resume treating patients. more trouble for the government's health care website. an outage knocked a key part of that site offline. nbc's white house correspondent peter alexander has the latest. peter, good morning. >> hi, natalie. this failure is blamed on another outside contractor. it's named teramark. this could impact online enrollments in all 50 states. with the fallout over the healthcare.gov website, they're saying it will be largely problem freebie the end of november giving millions of americans two weeks to meet the december 15th deadline if they want coverage by the new year.

good morning to you. 7:26. i'm marla tellez. uáuju)qj we're following a. driver is facing dui charges after police say she hit and killed a pedestrian in san jose. it happened about 3:00 this morning on weibel way off lee avenue in the willowglen neighborhood. the driver of the suv was backing into a driveway when she ran over a woman and hit a garage door. officers found beer cans at the scene. the driver was arrested for drunk driving and vehicular manslaughter. emotions are high in the north bay in santa rosa following the shooting death of a 13-year-old boy. hundreds gathered in winsor yesterday to pay respect to andy lopez.

bristle at. i've said you are the most accomplished american skier in history. why not just relax and accept that. and even rest on your resume. you also fire back, but is that feeling of not wanting to rest what's got you back so quickly? >> definitely. i don't want that to be the final moment of my career. obviously i could have retired and i have a lot to be proud of, but there is a lot more i want to do. sochi is obviously a huge goal of mine. so he had plenty of motivation. i wasn't going sit there and accept what i had already done. >> we look forward to seeing you back on the ski slope, but we have seen you on some golf courses around the world. obviously there for tiger. and that's another line of questioning you don't love. but you are two extremely driven elite athletes. have you learned anything from tiger either about mental preparation or physical preparation that you've now adopted? >> definitely.

ringo starr. that mystery has been resolved. when the beetles first came to america in 1964, it set off a frenzy of fans eager to get up close to the biggest selling band of all time. just last week ringo starr, the fab 4's famous drummer, set off his own frenzy after a story ran in "usa today" calling for a search for the people in this photograph. snapped by the star himself on that very first trip here to the states as a car load of teens passed the band while driving by. starr has included the book in his chibt called "photograph" which comes out next month. that was 49 years ago. have a seat, matt. here's our fab 5. we re-created the photo. can we show it to everybody? this is today. side by side. there's 49 years ago. you guys have not aged a bit. >> which one is the new one.
